World Theatre Day is celebrated on March 27 by theatre artistes, theatre companies and all those who love theatre.
The theatre community in Chennai intends to mark this Day with a special event on March 27 evening at Narada Gana Sabha auditorium in Alwarpet.
Dharini Komal, the daughter of the late playwright Komal Swaminathan who is also a playwright and director, has curated this event.
On May 27, each leading theatre group based in the city and around will present a short excerpt from one of their landmark plays. Leading lights such as Y. G. Mahendra, Kathadi Ramamurthy, Maali, Madhu Balaji, S. V. Shekhar, Ratnam, Augusto, Shraddha Theatres and the Dummies company have volunteered to take part in this show.
All the city sabhas are also supporting this event, says Dharini. Narada Gana Sabha is providing the auditorium for the show.
Dharini says the show will showcase the theatre legacy which the city has nurtured over decades.
The event starts with a felicitation of arts promoter Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti and the performances will roll from 6.30 p.m. Open to all.
