Another white goods store in Luz shuts down. Metro rail work continues to indirectly impact retail business

Blame it on  the Chennai Metro project if you will. Small and big stores in the Luz Circe zone continue to count their days and some are shutting shop, badly affected by the steep fall in retail business.

The latest to down its shutters is Shahs on Royapettah High Road, near Thannnithurai Market.

The shore, which sold everything from TV sets and fridges to cookers and air-conditioners, saw a drastic fall in the number of customers and shut shop some three weeks ago.

In the past one year, many small stores in this zone have closed down; some have shifted to convenient places in Mylapore while the rest have bid goodbye.

Since Luz Circle is a major work zone for Chennai Metro, with stations for two rail lines, running north-south and east-west, the extent of space used up for the work, the nature of work and the many traffic diversions effected, have all contributed to the impact on local retail business.

  1. I am curious to know, in all this dun, is Navasakthi Vinayagar temple still there? When I visited last, February 2024, the access was difficult and chaotic. If they are shifting or bringing down the temple I would be devastated, personally. So much of nostalgia is attached to the temple from the days of Senior priest Sivachariyar and his son.
