Margazhi begins and Mada Streets echo to devotional music of bhajan groups

Just past 5.30 am on Minday, December 16, the mada streets around Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple got a special zing; lots of people headed to groups which were here to start the margazhi  season devotion.

In North Mada Street, still clouded by the dew and a  bright moon up in the sky, a small group expressed their devotion with songs as they briskly walked down the street.

At one end, Carnatic music vocalist Saketharaman was joined by two dozen teens, all attired in their traditional best; the group began singing once it had formed and their stop at Rasi store, with the temple in the backdrop and the gentle warm rays of the sun on them, were a warm sight.

Another group, mostly elders and men, did the rounds of the mada streets, singing to their heart’s content, even as civic workers cleaned the streets and early workers doubled up to catch a train to their work spot.

And elsewhere, men and women, forming another group, sang and walked, slowly, down the street, their voices resounding in the morning quiet.
