Teppam creates a mela atmosphere around tank of Sri Kapali Temple

Saturday was mela day around the teppam festival of Sri Kapali Temple.

It was an evening, the third and final day of then teppam, when people first said a prayer as they watched the deities of Singaravelar and his consorts glide past them in the waters; and then they dispersed to shop, snack and meet friends on the three mada streets.

The snack sellers, small entertainment providers and amusement providers had set up shop around the temple tank since January 26; on Saturday though, lots of Mylaporeans and many from outside who cannot but dip into Mylapore off and on, were at the tank. And on the streets and the streets were packed.

Kids had a gala time jumping on the Bouncy Bed or sitting in the mini merry-go-round while the kamarakatt, gas balloon and jackfruit sellers made brisk business.

Men and women caught up with friends and chatted on sidewalks or on the streets and those who needed to snack in peace stepped into restaurants like Vasantha Bhavan and Sangeetha on South Mada Street.

And in the middle of the festive atmosphere, bikes, autos, vans and cars honked their way, diverted as they are now due to work on Chennai Metro.

Since the teppam was to do seven rounds in the waters, each round taking about 25 to 35 minutes, people who arrived at the tank zone after 7.30 p.m;. managed to slip into the tank and participate.
