Two dozen Mylaporeans made that extra effort to thematically create a design around the pongal they had cooked for the Pongal festival. This they did to be part of the Mylapore Times Pongal contest that was announced last weekend.
While some people chose the traditional backdrop – near the puja space or a setting with small images of deities, some others did a bit extra – they used banana leaves, sugarcane, fresh flowers and more to decorate the table on which the container of pongal was placed.
Some made a traditional kolam as the centrepiece of the design.
Others settled for a very simple, outdoor setting with sugarcane raised around the pongal pot.
This is the first time that Mylapore Times launched a Pongal-themed contest. The winners will be announced on Thursday and prizes will be sent to them by the weekend. All participants get a souvenir.
