The kumbhabishekam of Sri Malleeswarar Temple in Mylapore was performed on Sunday morning.
A tall flight of temporary stairs and some wooden galleries had been constructed around the main gopuram of the temple to enable the priests to carry out the rituals.
A few hundred people gathered around the temple to take part even as a group of musicians performed around them.
