Pongal festival fever ran high on the campus of Dr. MGR-Janaki College for Women as students gathered in groups to set off various events on Friday, January 12.
All of them were here in traditional attire – some in half sari, some in silk and some very ethnic in their clothes to match the occasion.
Student groups performed Kummiyattam, Karagattam, Oyilaatam, Kaavadiyaattam, Silambaattam and Bommalaattam folk dances – dancing to some modern-day beats.
Hawker stalls were set up and managed by students. They sold bangles and balloons, sugarcane juice and buttermilk, leaner and candy.
There were mehendi artists and a parrot fortune-teller around too.
Bhajji and sundal stalls did brisk sales.
“Celebrations like this one will help younger generation realise the richness of our culture and pass on it to the next generation. Our college is regularly organising culturally-rich events,” said Dr. Kumar Rajendran, chairman, Dr. MGR-Janaki College for Women.
