Ahead of the renovation work at Sri Madhava Perumal Temple., the sacred balalayam event will take place on the morning of February 1.
Chief priest Sundar Bhattar told Mylapore Times on Monday that the Balalayam event is scheduled to take place between 9.30am and 10.15am on Feb 1.
There will be no moolavar darshan at the temple till the consecration takes place.
The renovation work that includes painting of the raja gopuram and the vimanams will start in the first week of February and is expected to be completed in about three months. The renovation will also include refurbishing the sacred tank on the southern side, revival of the nandavanam and repair works of the flooring.
It will be interesting to see if the debris in the avathara sthalam on Arundel Street will be removed and if that sacred location will be also restored to its historical grandeur. This place has been going to seed over the years.
Businessman Venu Srinivasan’s Trust will undertake the renovation exercise. The previous renovation had started in 2005 with the temple consecration having taken place in 2007.

If the consecration does not take place before Chitrai, then the annual Brahmotsavam in Chitrai is likely to be postponed, Sundar Bhattar said.

A much needed overhaul work for which was overdue for quite long now. Glad it’s planned and pray it gets executed in time as planned without compromising on safety on timeless sculptures inside. This will give the needed facelift and restore the temple’s glory.
