A massive crowd was at the Marina beach on Tuesday, it being Kannum Pongal day, a day to loosen up and get some fresh air and have some fun outside.
The Chennai Corporation teams at work on the Marina had deployed their beach combers the previous evening and cleaned the sands and the police arranged casuarina barricades to be erected some metres from the seashore to prevent people from walking into the sea or swimming.
Police were also on patrol and strict, saying that they did not want unsavoury incidents to take place in the waters.
As the sun set, the place was packed and many families treated the visit as a picnic, opening up food baskets or buying snacks from beachfront hawkers.
