A huge number of police men and women were deployed at the Dr. Ambedkar Mantapam in R. A. Puram this evening as people gathered here to pay tributes on the death anniversary of Dr Ambedkar.
Even as people, which included members of various organisations, lawyers and activists paid their tributes, laid flowers or placed garlands around the base of the recently installed life-size statue of Ambedkar in the lawns facing the main road, police kept vigil.
The large contingent of police, unusual for such an occasion was said to have been a step taken after news came in that a pro-Hindu outfit leader was planning to visit the mantapam and many pro-Ambedkar supporters had decided to thwart the plan.
By 7.30 p.m., people who had gathered at the mantapam began to disperse as did most of the police personnel.
