Religious rites were formally conducted recently for the launch of houses for temple staff at a plot on Nadu Street, Mylapore.
This was held under the auspices of the HR&CE Department. Mylapore MLA and the executive officer of Sri Kapali Temple, D. Kaveri were present.
This is a new project.
Some priests and staff now reside in the run-down tiled quarters off Ponnambala Vadyar Street and East Tank Street; though these houses retain the architectural heritage of this temple zone, HR&CE minister Sekar Babu, in a flourish had announced a grand redevelopment plan for this entire temple property – with houses for priests and staff, washrooms and communjty hall for public and even elevated car parking.
The plan went into cold storage after heritage enthusiasts and professionals pointed out to the minister and HR&CE Dept. of the damage their plans could have on local, vital heritage and the uselessness of building community halls, parking lots of washrooms in a plot where access is poor.
