Chennai Corporation has resumed the work of clearing the pre-fabricated hawker stalls which the civic body had dumped in the Alphonsa playground in Mandavelipakkam, thereby curtailing the space to play and angering scores of youths who play at this popular playground.
GCC staff had arranged for the stalls’ transfer over a month ago but that job was limited to just one day, with some 20-odd hawker stalls taken out and dumped at the Mylapore crematorium.
Lots of complaints were lodged with the Mylapore MLA about the half-hearted work and this Monday morning, a big team of workers, employing JCBs and lorries were seen in operation at the playground.
GCC was to give enumerated hawkers on the Marina these stalls in place of the ones all of them use but the issue has got mired in a legal case and the stalls which were parked on the Marina and at Alphonsa playground for close to 2 years are in a bad condition today.
