On Sep.9, Alwarpet based NGO Citizen Consumer and Civic Action Group (CAG) and Press Institute of India (PII) jointly conducted a workshop for media persons at Hotel Savera at Radhakrishnan Salai, Mylapore.
The topic of discussion was – Media reporting for a sustainable energy future. Journalists from print, television and digital media platforms besides others attended the workshop.
As per a survey carried out by CAG from 2009 to 2018, it was pointed out that though the media widely covered the areas of renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and electricity tariff patterns, very less was reported on energy efficiency, gender and energy, climate change and other renewable energy resources.
“However, there is a constant increase in the coverage of these topics from 2017 to 2018,” said K.Vishnu Rao, from CAG, during his introduction speech.
While urging the journalists to report more on these issues, experts from various fields including, governance, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and electric mobility spoke about the various ways of tapping renewable energy sources.
Encouraging households to have grid-connected solar roof panels, promoting the use of efficient solar-run pumps in agricultural fields, having energy-efficient buildings, using traditional cooling methods (like having a courtyard in a house), challenges faced by the government and stake holders to introduce renewable energy resources, were some of the topics that the experts spoke in depth.
