With the monsoon season fast approaching, Greater Chennai Corporation has started desilting the storm water drains in the neighbourhood to ensure that water doesn’t stagnate on the roads when it rains.
At Alwarpet, mounds of silt were seen sitting on road corners at C. P. Ramaswamy Road. The area engineer for Corporation Ward 123 says, “We have completed the work at C. P. Ramaswamy Road. Since 2nd Cross Street and First Main Road at R. A. Puram get flooded very quickly when it rains, we will start working on these two streets next. We hope to get the nod on proposals for a few other streets soon”.
There are various reasons for a blockage he says. “The first is mud and dirt from the road. The second, he says are rats. The big ones often dig up the mud which blocks the flow of water. Leaves and other debris also enter the storm water drain through the chute pipe”.
It can take upto four days for the workers to desilt the drains on one street, he says. The work at both the streets at R. A. Puram will be done in a week, he adds.
