The buzz of Vinayaka Chathurthi is on in the Mylapore neighbourhood. While the hawkers of dolls and images on North Mada Street are resetting their wares on the pavements, local temples are rolling out their plans.
If you walk down to Luz, you will get to see the temporary mantapam being set up around the popular Sri Navashakti Vinayakar Temple.
Celebrations here are held on a grand scale – from Sept.6 to 12 this year. Badri, a temple volunteer says that pujas and alankarams are done daily in the morning and evening.
On Sept.9, the day of the festival, there will be a special abhishekam at 11 a.m. and a special alankaram of the moolavar too.
Every evening, 7.30 p.m. onwards there are music kutcheris starring top ranking artistes.
Badri says that a unique ritual here is the oonjal utsavam of the lord which will be held on Sept.11 evening when the deity will be in a resting position. “It is a day when the lord relaxes after the celebrations, ” says Badri.
