The sights on South Mada Street can be a safe indicator of the shopping and festival moods of this neighbourhood. So when we looked around early this week, there was no sign of a Pongal eve buzz.
But on Wednesday, cart loads of sugarcane began to arrive at the hawkers’ places. Prices range from Rs.400 for a bunch of 25 canes to Rs.350.
Stores are now stocked with jaggery that will be needed for the pongal preparation at festival time. Shops on the mada veedhis and Bazaar Road are safe bets.
Potters in spaces like Veraperumal Koil Street say the interest in coloured pots has waned. Babu, a senior potter says he does not make such pots now unless an order is placed.
