The annual Spirit of Mylapore award was given to Lady Sivaswami Ayyar Girls School on Sunday evening during the course of the annual Sundaram Finance Mylapore Festival.
Started some 149 years ago by the patron and lawyer Sir P S Sivaswamy Ayyar who sold his estate in the city to fund the school in its infancy years to serve the cause of girls education at that time, the award was given to the secretary of National Boys & Girls School Society which runs this school, Leela Narendran and to Headmistress Ruby Puthota on the main stage at Sannidhi Square.
T T Srinivasaraghavan, CMD, Sundaram Finance read the citation and handed over the the Spirit of Mylapore award.
The session, held between cultural events of the Festival was hosted by Sivakumar, VP, Sundaram Finance.
The award recognises Mylaporeans who have made a signal mark in this neighborhood. Past awardees include the pavement hawkers of book Alwar and late S Rajam, musician, artist and actor.
