Why is GCC not renting this community hall that cost over Rs.1 crore?

Why has Chennai Corporation kept locked a new community hall in San Thome’s sea side that was built in 2021 for some Rs.1.4 crores ?

This is a question that the former Mylapore MLA, R. Nataraj of the AIADMK is asking for the nth time.

And nobody seems to have an answer. Not even the current MLA, Dha Velu of the DMK.

“The hall is used for select events,” the MLA said sometime ago; what he referred to was the space being let out for some NGO to hold a training camp.

Not for local community events like weddings, betrothals, birthdays . . .

The hall is located in ward 125, in the middle of the re-developed Nochikuppam area off Marina Loop Road.

It is spacious and can serve for community meetings, social functions and workshops too and best serves the families who reside in these seaside colonies.

When a local GCC staff was asked how one could book this hall, he pointed to a centralised facility where people can rent GCC properties.

But it is clear that hardly any events have been held here.

“When such a big sum of money has been spent on this hall why is it locked and unused?”, asks ex-MLA Nataraj.
