R. M. Anbunathan runs the Marina Academy of Speed Skating.
He has been conducting skating classes at the Marina beachside since 2005. Now, he conducts the classes at St. Ebbas School off Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai. He says he had to shift in May 2024 after Chennai Metro started work on the rail project on and off the Marina.
“Many of my students have participated in the district, state and national level skating competitions, won prizes. Some of them have also got admission into colleges through sports quota,” says Anbunathan, who has held many leadership positions in the skating associations.
He says he has worked as the district, state and national referee for the past 25 years. Hailing from Madurai, Anbunathan says he learnt skating from Aurthro Greeko from Argentina.
“Children above the age of 4 years can join my classes but before joining, I check their foot size. It has to match the size of the skates and only then, can the training be done. I first ask them to walk with skates on and then gradually the training begins. Learning to skate increases the concentration and the fitness level of the students,” says Anbunathan who resides on Kallukaran street Mylapore.
He is now planning coaching classes for the summer holidays season.
