Obituary: K. R. Saraswathi, retired senior teacher at Rani Meyyammai Girls School, R. A. Puram

K. R. Saraswathi, a senior teacher at Rani Meyyammai Girls School in R. A. Puram, who retired as Assistant Headmistress, passed away on March 15 at her residence in Thiruvanmiyur. She was 91.

After the early demise of her husband, V. N. Lakshminarayana Rao, she lived independently till the last day of her life, her family said.

She pursued her education after her marriage: she first completed a course in Carnatic music at the Central College of Karnatak Music in R. A. Puram ( as the TN Govt. College of Music was known since the time it was started in 1949).

She went on to complete a post-graduate course in Tamil and got a post-graduate degree in education while teaching at Rani Meyyammai Girls School.

She retired as Assistant Headmistress here. “Scores of  ‘old girls’ of the school know her well,” said her niece. “Though she was strict she was very affectionate.”

Saraswathi was a vocalist and a ‘B’ grade artiste of All India Radio; she presented many concerts.

After her retirement, she took free tuition for the needy at her home in Thiruvanmiyur, lent a hand at centres run by NGOs and contributed to a few religious and educational institutions, her family said.

Said her niece Brinda Visakan, “She led her life by the Bhagavad Gita which she knew by heart and set an example which is tough to emulate.”
