Dr. Vilanoor Srinivasan, who was the head of the department of chemistry, R.K.M. Vivekananda College, Mylapore, and was affectionately known as Dr. V.S.S., passed away a fortnight ago at his son’s residence in the USA.
He did his post-graduate studies in chemistry and then completed his doctoral studies at Vivekananda; he was keen to serve his alma mater and taught here; he served the institution with distinction, for over three decades, rising up to the level of the Head of the department.
Said his classmate R. Ramachandran ( M. Sc. batch of 1972), who shared details on the professor, “He was completely devoted to the ideals of swami Vivekananda and this showed in his passion and commitment at the college.”
Dr. Srinivasan guided a number of students in their research projects.
“The chemistry department of Vivekananda College has produced outstanding scholars who are known around the world and Dr. Srinivasan was one of the great mentors,” said Ramachandran. “He was specially known for his passion for teaching organic chemistry and in particular, reaction mechanisms.”
The professor not only devoted time to the study of chemistry but also supported campus activities during his time at the college.
