‘Muthalvar Maruntakams’ ( chief minister’s pharmacies) have been opened in the Mylapore zone following the launch by Tamil Nadu chief minister M. K. Stalin of hundreds of pharmacies across the state on February 24.
These pharmacies promise to offer generic medicines at costs that are far less than those sold at other pharmacies.
They also stock medical needs like first aid and basic medical accessories. Pain-killers, medicines to treat diabetes, bloid pressure and common ailments are stocked.
We checked out the small pharmacy on Pughs Road, which runs off from Greenways Road towards the Adyar river and has a large population of middle and low-middle sections of the community here.
There were two staff. The display racks had a small stock of medicines.
The pharmacy is open 10 am to 8 pm.
There are two more pharmacies of this kind – one is located in the Sri Anjaneya Temple campus in Alwarpet, off Luz Church Road ( this was not fully operational) and the other is located in CIT Colony.
