Is Kalvi Varu Street the ‘alternate’ hawking zone for Luz Circle hawkers?

Will all the street hawkers who were based in Luz Circle be given spaces along Kalvi Varu Street in Mylapore as an alternate hawking space so that Chennai Metro can carry on with what has been a delayed work schedule in Luz?

No clear answers yet, though some developments have taken place the past few days.

On the pavement of Kalvi Varu Street, the street that runs alongside the Buckingham Canal, and links up with Kutchery Road, at least three hawker stalls have been located here though all of them are tightly covered with the goods inside.

These are said to be the stalls of hawkers who have chosen to make the shift early.

But other hawkers who still run their business in Luz Circle do not hint at moving to the ‘alternate’ space; not as yet.

The newly designated hawking space has already bothered residents of the area.  They say this road is a busy road, with many bikes, autos and cars violating the ‘one way’ rule and a congested place too at school opening and closing hours since the Vidya Mandir school gates are located here.

The pavement here was given a smart look with new street furniture, even lighting and small play spaces for kids in a GCC project executed during the time of the former Mylapore MLA, R. Nataraj.

If all the hawkers are moved here, the improved civic zone will fade out.

  1. The kalvi varu street hawkers zone should be shalved as it will create more commotion as vidya mandir and other schools are in the locality and the kids infrastructure put in place there would be of no use to public as more people are using this space.
