Thousands of people roared as the clock struck 12 at the traffic island on Kamaraj Salai off the Marina Beach in Mylapore zone at midnight, ringing in the new year – 2025.
They whistled, screamed, cheered and waved madly at everybody around but remained civil all through the time they were here to celebrate the start of a new calendar year.
The clock tower has for many years now been the public New Year celebration point in this part of the city and last night, it drew people from all over – men and women, children and youth.
People streamed in after 10 p.m. even as traffic on three sides was curtailed in this zone and people could walk freely to gather around the island.
The island and the clock tower were richly illuminated and made a visually strong image for the occasion.
Police had secured the place but were not overpowering with their presence.
