One of the nice places to stop and stare when it rains in the Mylapore zone are the temple tanks in this region.
Take the tank of Sri Kapali Temple, If you manage a spot opposite Sangeetha restaurant on the edge of South Mada Street you will be able to see the rainwater from the area flow into the tank, at times gushing forth like a water pump working in paddy fields, when the rain is steady.
The tank is not even half full now but steady rain can fill it up gradually though we have not seen it overflow.
But the Chitrakulam has overflown on many occasions. In the old times, the tanks of Kapali Temple and this were linked by drains to let excess water level and flow into the Chitrakulam.
For the Adi Kesava Perumal Temple kumbhabisshekam, the tank has been neatened and the mantap painted. The tank is half-full now.
The tank of Sri Virupakseeswarar Temple, north of Kutchery Road has a well maintained tank that is 70% full now; water flows from the streets and other inlets. But it exhausts quickly when the many water borewell motors around the temple tap the sources.
