Chennai Corporation has plans for a fish market and a food court at the far south end of Marina Loop Road. Preliminary discussions on this project have begun at the local level.
Local ward councillor Amirda Varshini says a meeting was held to discuss this.
She said that she had mooted this project some months ago at the Council meeting and that GCC picked up the idea.
It is not clear yet where this project will be located but some rough plans put on the table show the location at the bend in the Loop Road; with the fish market facing the main road and food joints on the other side. There is a large parcel of land here.
Amirda says she too is unsure about the exact location of the project.
The market is obviously meant to accommodate the hawkers of the Pattinapakkam – Srinivaaspuram zone who refused to get into the current mod market.
Asked if the present line of seafood joints that have a thriving business will be relocated there, the councillor said that may well be the case.
Presently, bikes and cars parked alongside the food stalls cause traffic jams on what is a busy road.
