The day for ‘Vidyarambam’. At a temple and at a school.

October 12, Saturday was Saraswathi puja day in the Navaratri season. It was also the day for ‘Vidyarambam’. A ceremony that initiates children into learning on this auspicious day.

At Sri Ayyappa Temple, MRC Nagar, ( first photo) parents and their tiny tots sat down to participate in the ‘Vidyarambam’ ceremony which is conducted annually in a quiet and neat manner, with a priest around. This was done in batches to avoid crowding.

Similarly, parents got together at Chellammal School off Sundareswarar Street, Mylapore ( second photo) for this ritual. Here, mothers cradled their kids in their laps and helped them to move their fingers to draw the akshara.
