Kamadhenu Theatre, an icon of Mylapore for decades is now reduced to dust. It is being demolished to make way for a new project.
Once the go-to theatre foe release of new films, a place visited by stars of the time on film release day and a hub for Mylaporeans, it shut down and was converted into a community/wedding hall.
But it did not become a buzzing sales or social centre.
With Chennai Metro work barricading all sides, this place too fell into darkness.
Built by the Chettiars of Devakottai on land leased from a famous zamindar of east Godavari district, Kamadhenu was a popular theatre in its time.
Mylapore also had Kapali Theatre on R K Mutt Road, now camous of high rise residential blocks.

New makes way for old. I fondly remember watching Sri RAma Bhaktha HanumAn and SampoorNa RAmAyaNam with my grandmother in the 60s. Rs 1.66 ticket. Biked past 4x/day (lunch at home) to and from Vivekananda college. 25 paisa booklet containing actors, roles, credits, and plot used to end in a suspense with the phrase (மற்றவை வெள்ளித்திரையில் காணுங்கள்). Namasthe from Pennsylvania.
