Obituary: Uma Neelakantan of Akwarpet. Helped clean temples, read for the blind.

Uma Neelakantan, 77, a long-time resident of Alwarpet, passed away on October 4.

Known amongst her friends and family for her warmth, kindness and unwavering dedication, Uma is survived by her husband Neelankantan, daughter Srividya and her grandchildren Ananya and Anirudh.

Born on December 8, 1946 to industrialist N S Krishna Rao and Raja Lakshmi, Uma lived in CIT Colony till her marriage and later, from 1979 lived in Alwarpet.

She studied at St Ebba’s and was a gold medalist at SIET College ( JBAS College) where she pursued BSc, Home Science.

“Her life was a testament to her resilience and compassion. My mother was extremely artistic and loved painting and doll making, which she pursued with great enthusiasm. Devout and soft-spoken, she was actively involved in uzhavarapani (temple cleaning work by devotees) as well as reading to blind children, where she made a significant impact and touched many lives. She was determined yet kind, always dependable and loved animals. In recent times, she enjoyed spending quality time with her grandchildren, be it playing board games, or regaling them with stories,” says Srividya, her daughter, who lives in Boston, MA.

Srividya adds that her mother’s favourite spots were the Pillayar temple on TTK Road, the Hanuman temple nearby and the Mylapore Fine Arts Club sabha.

Uma’s husband, K Neelankantan worked in Union Carbide for 15 years and then started his own company in Ambattur industrial estate in 1980.

Uma’s son. Sanjieev passed away in January 2023.
