One community is using the breaks in the rainfall to set right civic issues on its streets. Residents of Raja Street in Mandaveli and around, step out and work alongside civic staff to see that rainwater flow is as it should be.
They clear dead vegetation and waste that waters bring to the area and clogs the vents and drain inlets.
They also try and remove accumulated silt in the drains.
Activist Ganga Sridhar says that while people can sit safe inside their home when it rains, conditions outside can be improved if people step out and oversee and help maintain the condition of the drains and ensure water flows smooth.
” If we take the lead, civic staff are happy to join us,” says Ganga. “If you leave it to them, they may do a half-baked job.”
On Tuesday morning, when the rain was light, the residents and civic staff were out on the streets to do what they have now done every monsoon.
