Monsoon 2024: groundwater seeps in some apartments. Expert says sinking small wells, tapping the water is the need

The community at Lasya Apartments on St. Mary’s Road, R. A. Puram are not too pleased with water seeping out of the ground.

This has taken place this past week.

The development has not caused much harm but residents have realised they have to act.

They have called the man who has been addressing rainwater harvesting issues – Shekar Raghavan of the Adyar-based Rain Centre which was formerly in Mandavelipakkam.

Shekar has suggested that wells be dug and set up and the accumulating water be used right away. The work will cost some money but it is a better option than internal flooding.

“Many people are just not tapping the rising groundwater because they get Metrowater supplies,” says the rainwater evangelist who had worked on such SOS calls before.

He says that a campus close-by on St Mary’s Road has an open well and the water level there is about 6 ft from the top.

Shekar says the groundwater level in most areas of Mylapore zone will be high; not so in the sandy region of San Thome.

Seepage has been reported from places like Balakrishnan Street off R H Road.  Last year, some houses off Dr Ranga Road had to use pumps to drain such water that filled the sumps.
