Few hawkers move into modern fish market off Marina Loop Road

Fish sales have begun at the recently constructed fish market of Chennai Corporation on Marina Loop Road. A symbolic  launch took place in the presence of Mylapore MLA today.

But only a handful of women fish hawkers took their places at this modern, spacious and well-designed market located midway down the Loop Road.

There are still some sticky issues that beset the operations. There are over 300 fish hawkers who are said to have been enumerated for allotment of spaces here. All of them use the road and sands to hawk fish and have been at it for decades.

Many hawkers challenged the rental amount that GCC had fixed; starting at Rs.3500 per month. We hear that has been scaled down.

There are murmurs that spaces in the modern market have been issued to hawkers who do not belong to the local kuppams nor hawking locally.

The market is one of the busiest in the city, with sales of fish brought to Kasimedu fishing harbour as well as that caught off the Marina.

Chief minisster M. K. Stalin had formally opened this market via video conference a few months ago but it was kept locked this far.
