GCC’s deputy commissioner listens to flooding fears of Alwarpet zone residents, explains measures taken

On September 3, the Regional Deputy Commissioner, Chennai Corporation, Praveen Kumar IAS met the residents of Alwarpet at a meeting held in Venus Colony and attended by a few residents too.

He was accompanied by the officials of Zone 9 and Division 118.

The agenda – to address monsoon flooding issues of the area which, in the past, messed up many lives.

In December 2023, the areas comprising Venus Colony, Murrays Gate Road and Maharaja Surya Road saw
flash floods, with water standing two to three feet inside houses and four feet on the roads. The area was under water for 4 days.

Praveen Kumar listened to the problems faced by the residents and assured them that Chennai Corporation is taking several measures to avoid such a situation during the monsoon this year.

A new storm water drain is being laid to connect Murrays Gate Road to the collection point on Eldams Road and will be completed by September 10.

The SWDs on Luz Church Road and Musiri Subramanyam Salai, which were partially blocked by the Metro Rail project are now repaired to carry rainwater to the Buckingham Canal from the collection point near Kauvery hospital, he said.

An additional SWD is being laid through Veera Perumal Street to Buckingham Canal. It will be completed by end September.

He assured that rainwater from areas like Anna Salai in Teynampet and the areas in Cathedral Road will be diverted to other canals and will not flow into Sriman Srinivasa Road collection point, which is already overloaded.

He has requested further information from the residents regarding work that needs to be done before rain. There will be a review meeting shortly to assess the progress of the civil works, said Sujatha Vijayaraghavan, a resident who co-ordinated this meet.
