Thousands of pilgrims take San Thome route to attend Annai Vailankanni feast opening day

This Thursday, August 29, people from all parts of Chennai took what may be called the pilgrims path that ended at the Annai Vailankanni shrine in Besant Nagar.

Thousands were seen walking since morning, down the Marina road and San Thome High Road, to attend the flag-hoisting service that evening.

This event signals the start of the annual feast that celebrates the birth of Mother Mary – which is on Sept.8.

In the streaming crowd, were mothers with babies in their arms, the less abled in wheel-chairs, people in their 70s and 80s and groups who pulled small, decorated carts that held the image of Mary.

While thousands head to the Annai Vailankanni Church near Nagapattinam, down south, many others visit the Besant Nagar church.
