A modern fish market built by the city’s civic body on Marina Loop Road was formally opened via video-conference by the state’s chief minister, M K Stalin, along with a few other projects across the state.
Mylapore MLA Dha Velu and four councillors of the Mylapore zone were present at the market site at the launch. Also present was the GCC commissioner, who later briefed the MLA on the features of the market.
There are over 300 plus stone-granite stalls under the colourful canopy and facilities to clean fish, dispose of fish waste and water supply lines. There is also a large parking space for the cars and bikes of shoppers.
All the fish hawkers who use the sands and roadside of the Loop Road are expected to move to the modern market. But some hawkers are debating the pros and cons of the rentals.
Also, dozens of hawkers who have not been accommodated at the new market, are demanding that they too must be given space.
