A group of students of Queen Mary’s College, Mylapore joined members of Rotary International District 3234 for a beach cleaning drive in Pattinapakkam to mark International Plastic Bag-Free Day.
The college girls, working in teams, cleared plastic and other waste on the sands here.
T. Vivekanandan, assistant commissioner of police, Mylapore, graced the event and commended the students’ efforts. Bharathi Saravanan of Rotary was also present.
Participants collected several kilograms of waste and significantly improved the condition of the beach in this sector, said Dr K P Vijayakumar of Rotary in a media release.
It’s wonderful to see Beach clean up drives at regular intervals by individuals or groups – however what is urgently needed , is to have the beach cleaned up of all the shops that litter – and by selling food and organising games (like balloon shooting) , people litter the beach – would be a wonderful initiative by the govt to clear the beach of such vendors – the thenga manga pattani sundal vendors of yore didnt litter the beach with so much junk- a solution is ur gently in need , and the govt must take initiative – corruption is so deeply a curse that many take money to settle their shops !
