Percussion vidwan B. Shree Sundarkumar was presented with the annual Palghat Mani Iyer award which is dedicated to the legendary mridangam vidwan.
Chennai Fine Arts hosted this event on June 10 at Srinivasa Sastri Hall, Luz, to celebrate 113th birth anniversary of the vidwan .
At the event, CFA’s founder P. N. Muralidharan spoke on the awardee selection and on Shree Sundarkumar.
Vidwan Haridwaramangalam A. K. Palanivel presided over the function and presented the award, and a cash prize of Rs.15,000, instituted by Palghat Mani Iyer’s son vidwan T. R. Rajaraman.
Sundarkumar is a sought-after percussion artiste and performs alongside all top-ranking vidwans. After initial training under his father, the well-known mridangist Dr. K B S Mani, he had his formal training under vidwan Kaaraikudi Mani.
At his music school, Kanjiraman Academy,Sundarkumar has been coaching many students across the globe.
The award function was followed by a concert by A. S. Murali along with M. A. Sundareswaran on the violin, Sundarkumar on mridangam and B. S. Purushotham on kanjira.
