A group of residents of Kumara Vijayam Apartments of Mundagakanni Amman Street, Mylapore are back at their gates this summer, to offer a glass of freshly-made buttermilk to passers-by.
This community has been doing this act of charity for the last 10 years.
Abirami Vishwanathan gets up earlier than usual, for some weeks in the May -June peak summer season, as she has taken it upon herself to make buttermilk for public distribution.
She and her husband, A V Vishwanathan lead residents here to lend a hand.
About 220 litres of buttermilk is made daily – from 15 liters of curd. White pumpkin, ginger, lemon juice, green chilies, and curry leaves are added to the curd.
Residents donate whatever they can for this cause. In the past, the odd passersby, touched by this service, have donated for this cause.
Buttermilk is distributed from 11.30 am to 12.45pm. Mostly, delivery staff, auto drivers, maids, sanitary workers and vendors stop by to refresh themselves.
There is no distribution on Sunday.

The mylaporians do lots of service that go unnoticed for what reason, i don’t know. They do it unmindful of anything. Politicians should open their eyes and give support and publicise it , coming out of their one sided Focus
Well if you have covered just this area, you are missing the bigger picture. Regularly from May 1st of every year, till End of May, Sri Sathya Sai Samithi s conduct the Butter Milk distribution. Butter Milk will be prepared by every member of the samithi, pooled together, and distributed to everyone.
Mylapore Times has reported on this community service; a unit on Dr Ranga Road does it.
