Yeshoda Rao, a resident of CIT Colony, passed away a fortnight ago in Bangalore. She was a Mylaporean since 1968 and lived in CIT Colony since 1983.
She superannuated as Professor and HoD of department of history from Women’s Christian College in 1996 . She was then Principal of St Thomas School in Broadway till 2000.
After retirement, she volunteered with Sneha Foundation ( the suicide prevention helpline)
Her family said she was multi lingual and multi-talented person.
Widowed in her 40s, she had to take care of two college-going daughters with minimal financial support, but braved all odds to move up in life, her family said.
The alumnae and retired faculty of WCC remember her for being the first faculty member who used to drive her own car to college. They also remember that she would stand by what she thought was right however unpopular it made her, and she would not spare those who didn’t stand up for what was right.
In the words of Padma, her student in the 70s, ” Mrs Rao was in a league of her own. She was a facilitator of knowledge rather than a mere lecturer. She would not spoon feed with notes but insist that books from the library should be read up for reference. She would reward well researched answers and assignments with higher marks”
Even after retirement, she was invited by students as chief guest for functions in their schools and colleges where they were principals.
She leaves behind her daughters, Dr Manjushree Naik and Shreyas Nair and their families.
