Two plays played out on stage at Kodai Nataka Vizha of Kartik Fine Arts this far and the fare has been average.
One day one, the show went on predictable lines – many troupes and artistes are still caught in a time warp – of standing in a line and delivering dialogues, with a well-worn backdrop, the usual drawing room of a house.
Day 2, Legally Yours troupe attempted to wow the audience – a Titanic ship set for the opening scene to set the tone for the story unfolding: a set of a classroom with many teens starring in it, with nice digital images creating the classroom/library/ campus feel.
And yet, the first quarter of the play limped, rather amateurishly of some sort of romance between teachers in classrooms where students broke in too.
The drama fest, an annual one, is a big drawn and a welcome diversion during the searing summer heat.
But the fest host definitely needs to preview the plays it presents; yes, given that amateur theatre in the city lives on fresh air and passion, and nil funding, raising a play is a challenge but new productions better be engaging.
