English theatre shows in the city have a limited draw. But this week, one play drew a packed house even on a weekday, lifting up the spirits of its promoters, the director and the actors.
‘Hold the Mushrooms!’ is a play written by Chennai-born Binoy Mohan, with just four characters in it – a middle-aged couple, their daughter and the young man she hopes to marry.
All the shows staged at Medai-The Stage in Sriram Nagar, Alwarpet drew a full house.
On Wednesday night, the final show of this series, Medai was packed, with people streaming in after the lights went off for the start of the show – creatively designed with the core set of the dining space arranged in the middle of the Medai hall and the audience seated all around it.
Starring T. M. Karthik, Roshan Poncha, Gibran Osman and Tanaaz Zoroofchi, the play is directed by veteran theatre, film and entertainment director, Michael Muthu.
Muthu, at curtain call, said that he didn’t expect a full house on a weekday and asked people to continue to support theatre and artistes.
He had a warm word for Medai promoter Charles, whose Chennai Art Theatre collaborated with Boardwalkers for this play. “Medai is a wonderful theatre space,” said Muthu. ” Charles has changed the theatre scene in the city.”
Charles manages a Medai in Bengaluru and is opening one in Coimbatore.
