By all accounts, Friday’s ther procession drew perhaps the largest crowds in recent years of the Panguni festival of Sri Kapali Temple in Mylapore.
If there were at least 3000 plus people around the cheriot even before ot rolled out of the shelter on Sannidhi Street, people began to stream into the mada streets all through the morning and trailed the chariot till it got back to its base around 2.30 p.m.
Despite the massive participation, there was much order in the rising heat of some 32 degrees at noontime and police were at their job all through, making sure people didnt spill into the path of the giant wheels of the ther.
Many people made their visits as the sun went down and the crowds had thinned down.
