Mylapore police are investigating a complaint that a still unidentified person emptied a can of petrol outside the locked east gate of Sti Kapali Temple and set that on fire around midnight of Tuesday.
Some people who were in the area shot the act on their phone and have shared the image.
Property of the temple was not affected.
People point out that the temple does not have guards outside its gates.
