Abiramapuram resident Revathi Ramachandran, who was director of Kalakshetra has ended her assignment there on October 31.
In the last lap of her tenure as head of this prestigious cultural campus founded by Rukmini Devi Arundale, Revathi was in hit waters, having to deal with a controversy related to sexual harassment charges against a teacher at the college on this campus made by a former female student.
This issue erupted in March 2023, college students went on strike, the media was full of reportage on the issue and the way it was handled; the accused teacher, a male, was later arrested by the police and is now out on bail.
A senior Bharatanatyam dancer and dance teacher and a star basketball player in her youth, Revathi took charge in 2018 and her tenure was to be on till 2021. It was then extended and it came to an end in October 2023.
“It was unending work all these years, sometimes thankless too. But I enjoyed every moment of it and am quite happy with whatever I have done at Kalakshetra,” said Revathi days after she said goodbye to Kalakshetra and handed over charge to an officer there.
What next?
“I have not made up my mind yet,” she said.
Revathi runs a Bharatanatyam school in Abiramapuram; her daughter Manaswini, also a dancer, handled its classes when Revathi was heading Kalakshetra.
