A major operation on the Chennai Metro’s San Thome – Mylapore section underground railway line project was set in motion on Friday, September 1 and it took place on the Marina, near the Gandhi statue zone.
A giant tunnel boring machine, named Flamingo, got to work to bore into the earth to enable the underground section to be laid later. This took place after a snappy puja was performed below the road level, closer to the Light House side.
Over the next many weeks, Flamingo will keep boring, to help construct the underground section – linking the Light House station end with the Luz Circle double-stations end via Kutchery Road and on to Alwarpet.
Work on the underground Kutchery Road station began many months ago; that section of the road is out of bounds.
Civil contractors have also begun the first stage of civil work around Luz Circle. An area on Luz Church Road, where Sukha Nivas restaurant is located, has been barricaded and work is due to begin soon.
In the months ahead, the bridge near Thirumylai MRTS station, over the Buckingham Canal, which connects Mylapore and Mandaveli with Luz, will have to be demolished to allow for underground work for the Metro line – this line which will link up Adyar and go down the IT Corridor is part of Phase II of the Chennai Metro project.
