Civic staff, with local police tagging along, were back on South Mada Street this Saturday morning to clear the vegetable hawkers on the pavements.
The drive is part of the plan to clear the mada streets of hawkers in preparation for the conduct of the annual Panguni utsavam of Sri Kapali Temple.
This is the second such drive.
Hawkers do not give up though; they return hours after the ‘drive’ is over and the GCC staff and police have turned back.
There are two streams of opinion on how these hawkers must be treated at utsavam times – some Mylaporeans say their livelihood must not be affected but they can be reigned in. Others want hawkers cleared for good, wondering why pavements turn into their hawking yards.
