The first set of images of lord Vinayaka have been set up by the mada veedhi hawkers, for sale. These images made way for those of lord Krishna.
One hawker we met this Monday morning, near the Chitrakulam proudly displayed a big set of ‘black and gold’ painted Vinayaka statues; the black is said to be varnish coat on the clay base and the golden paint heightens the statue. They are sourced from the Puducherry zone.
This hawker says this form of Vinayaka is a lucky charm, but we suspect this has to do with a smart sales gimmick.
He also has simple clay statues on sale.
While the small ones of the ‘black and gold’ type costs between Rs.150 and Rs.1500, the clay ones are less priced but vary from day to day.
