A retrospective of the paintings of K. Sreenivasalu ( 1923 – 1995), a celebrated artist who finds a name in the unique Madras art movement is now on at Ashvita’s art gallery, located off Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai, Mylapore.
It will be on till end May.
Sreenivasalu was a student of D. P. Roy Chowdhury at the College of Art, Madras. His art is said to have been influenced by south Indian murals, folk and craft traditions of the region and by the art of Jamini Roy.
Sreenivasulu also worked at Kalakshetra and lived in Adyar.
This exhibition features the works of Sreenivasulu largely from the 1950s. A note by Ashvita says that ‘during these years, he took his prior engagement with folk art and other Indian pictorial traditions further and evolved a visual language that was shaped by these affinities.’
