Carnatic music vidwan B Rajam Iyer’s birth centenary celebrations start today with an event this evening (May 21) 6.30 pm onwards at Narada Gana Sabha (main hall) in Alwarpet.
Besides an audio visual presentation on the artiste, a book is to be released. Also, three senior artistes – Guruvayur Durai, M. Chandrasekaran and T V Gopalakrishnan will share their memories of Rajam Iyer.
Then follows a concert by S. Sowmya. who is accompanied by Embar Kannan and Neyveli Narayanan.
Rajam Iyer was decorated with the Sangita Kalanidhi award by The Music Academy and the Padma Bhushan by the government.
A note on his life and work states that ‘perhaps his greatest achievement was bringing out the Tamil edition of Sangita Sampradaya Pradarshini written by Subbarama Dikshitar. This was done for the Madras Music Academy.
