The 125th Foundation Day of Ramakrishna Mission was celebrated at Sri Ramakrishna Math in Mylapore on May 1.
The Ramakrishna Mission was founded by swami Vivekananda on May 1, 1897, soon after his return from an eventful tour of America.
A note from the Math said that Sri Ramakrishna, during his lifetime had trained a group of young disciples to be the torch
bearers of his messages, and through them laid the foundation of a new monastic order,
which came to be known as Ramakrishna Math and Mission.
The main goal of these organisations is interfaith harmony, equality and holistic development of the society The monks, with support from lay devotees and philanthropic associations conduct varied social welfare activities such as running schools, hospitals, rural development, hold skill courses and give vocational training, with its centres across the world.
Sunday’s event at the Math campus in Mylapore included a formal event, with special guests speaking on this occasion, followed by a special arati at the temple and a concert.
